The poultry industry is providing for a major portion of meat needs in every country. The egg supply by breeding poultry birds like chicken, ducks, turkeys and geese is billions per day in the world. Poultry birds are farmed to get multiple benefits ranging from the consumption of their eggs and meat to ornamental, feather usage, leather, oil and alarm calling.
Birds like chicken, duck, emu, swans, ostrich, goose, turkey and pheasant etc. are the main source of poultry farming. When used as a food source, the meat and eggs provide great nutrition value. Among all the poultry birds chicken is the largest source of meat and eggs.
The most common poultry
Chicken
Chicken is the largest source of poultry meat and eggs. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that at one point chicken population in factory farms was estimated to be 50 billion collectively from all across the world. There is a variety of chicken bred specifically for the purpose of meat production. Commercially bred chicken are called broilers. Prepared in a variety of ways, the nutrition value and health issues related to chicken consumption are mostly depending on the cooking method.
Duck
There are several species of duck that are as a source of meat, the most common of them being Pekin Duck. In comparison to chicken, duck is not a very big source of poultry meat. Most of the duck meat and egg consumption is done in China. Though USA and UK are not the biggest consumers of China however, the genetic material for large scale duck production is provided by them. Duck poultry industry has a strong opportunity to be introduced in other parts of the world other than Asia.
Turkey
Turkeys are selected for breeding on the basis of size and meat quantity. Roasting a turkey is more difficult than to make processed meet. Turkey feather also has many uses. Its feather is popular for making feather fibres by blending it with nylon and when the blend is put into spinning process, it becomes yarn. Industrial turkey breeding industry produces as high as 4 billion feather as by product annually.
Goose
The largest poultry goose production is farmed in China though many of the different goose species are abundant in Eastern Europe. White Embden species is the most common for commercial breeding. Goose weigh from 4 kilogram to 15 kilogram. Like turkey, goose feather is also used commercially. One goose can produce as much as 400 grams of feather per year.
