barbecue

Barbeque can be written as BBQ or Bar-B-Q. It is also spelled as barbeque, although the standard English version is barbecue. It is a technique for cooking meat by smoking it, usually over hot pieces of charcoal. It is different from grilling, because it uses less heat than the latter. It adds a delicious flavor to the food and therefore, is extremely popular in many countries.

Barbecue History

It is said that the method of cooking food in such a way originally belonged to the Caribbean. The term ‘barbecuing’ has different connotations in Britain and U.S. In Britain, barbecuing is seen as fast cooking over high heat, whereas in the U.S. it is seen as being completely opposite, that is, slow cooking over indirect heat.

Barbecue Technique

It is usually done outdoors to avoid being poisoned by the smoke and heat arising from the wood or charcoal. Many restaurants, however, have special ovens designed to produce barbecue indoors. It can be smoked, baked or braised. In braising, a gas or electric charbroil grill is usually used. Through braising, the meat can be glazed with sauce and be cooked three times, making it have a really soft texture. This method is faster than smoking, but slower than baking or grilling. Each of the techniques has their own advantages and disadvantages and so the final choice will vary according to an individual’s own preferences. Some may like it smoked, and so would prefer smoking to produce barbecue. Some may like it to be made fast, and so they will bake it.

Barbecue Popularity

It is extremely popular in parties and festivals, where people enjoy eating it. It has now become so famous among everyone that many parties are just solely based on barbeque food. Many restaurants also specialize in making barbecue dishes in many parts of the world. It has occupied a special place in many gatherings and events, so much so that the term barbecue has transgressed its original boundaries, and is now even applied to social gatherings where food is served. So one must not be surprised if one is invited to a barbecue, but he/she sees no meat served. This is because the barbecue that he/she was invited to must have referred to the social gathering itself, and not to any barbecue meat. However, in some places, such gatherings are not termed as barbecues, unless barbecue is itself served as food.
