fish

Fish is eaten by not only humans but many other species too. The word “fish” is applied to the animal and the food made out of it. Fish has been a vital part of diet for humans as it’s a great source of proteins.

Fish History

Fish probably has been used as food since Paleolithic period, about 40,000 years ago. Research and analysis of the skeletal remnant of Tianyuan man (a 40,000 year old being from eastern Asia) shows he had a regular intake of freshwater fish. Other that this, cave paintings demonstrate that fish was used to be significant for survival and had been eaten in good quantity. The old river Nile was also known to be having fresh water and dried fish. Due to this, it was consumed significantly by the population there then.

Fish Nutritional Value

Fish offers an excellent supply of high quality protein and holds many vitamins and minerals. Fish is classified into three groups; white, oily and shellfish. Examples of white fish include: haddock and sheer. They contain very less amount of fat which is usually not more than 1%. Example of oily fish is sardine. Oily fish carry fat between 10-25%. Due to its high fat content, oily fish holds a variety of fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K and necessary fatty acids. All of these are nutritious and vital for a healthy body.

Fish Benefits

Studies show that fish is a good source of nutrients, mineral and specially the omega 3 fatty acids that are heart friendly and help in brain development and reproduction.

Fish is the most frequent food to block the airway and result in choking. In 1998, around 4,500 mishaps due to choking on fish were taken in account in the UK. Other than this, fish can also be the reason for poisoning, particularly when it is caught from polluted areas.

Cooking Fish

Fish is cooked and prepared in several ways around the world. The common methods of preparing fish include: marinating, pickling, smoking, baking, frying, grilling, poaching and steaming. Some fish are served raw too.
