smoked food
Smoked food is simply, as implicated by its name, food that is layered with smoke by burning wood for different purposes. Wood from all trees cannot be used for this purpose, as some trees may be poisonous. It doesn’t necessarily require heat or cooking to smoke food. It is usually done with barbeque food to give the food a unique texture and a delightful taste.
Smoked Food Popularity:
A story covered by a blogger on the Guardian, talked about the rise of smoked food. It discussed that although the art of preparing smoked food originated centuries ago, it is still popular and renders the food as delicious as it used to be back then. The story discusses how the contestants at the popular reality show, MasterChef Australia, smoked their foods time and again, whenever they got the opportunity. Smoking food in just the right amount infuses flavor in the food. However, there’s a trick to it. Smoking food is not something everyone can learn in an instance. It requires skills and practice. The food can get overcooked, and thus become completely useless. Moreover, you don’t want the black carbon soot to poison you.
Smoked food and health
The question is, since it’s nothing more than allowing the smoke to settle on food, is it healthy? After all, it is similar to smoking, only this time with the food added. There is no doubt that it is tasty, but what about its repercussions? One of the disadvantages of smoked foods is that they are often not fully cooked, and this leaves the food raw. There are many bacteria present in raw food which can only be eliminated by cooking the food properly at high heat. However, this is not the main concern. The real trouble is when the process of smoking releases carcinogenic compounds, nitrates and nitrites in the food. This can have serious implications leading to cancer. However, smoking food does have its advantages too. It lowers the fat-content in the food that has been smoked, and so is soon going to be adopted as a part of diet by the diet conscious people. Many have tried to increase the benefits of smoking food, while doing away with the health risks. Marinating the food in a vinegar base before smoking is believed to reduce the carcinogenic content. However, a carcinogen, whether in a small quantity or large, is still a carcinogen, and one doesn’t need to write a full-page essay to explain the disastrous effects of carcinogens on the body.
It is recommended that you stay away from such eating practices which cause harm, even if the harm is probabilistic. However, many people still eat it. It is especially popular in barbeques, where the blacker the skin of the meat without being burned too much, the tastier it is. If the skin doesn’t turn black, it is seen as being undercooked. The flavor is imparted to it when the smoke seasons the food and the latter gets absorbed into it. Since, now the smoke has got merged in the food, it’s no longer just black soot. You should do your research well before eating or smoking any food.
