berries

Berries are a diverse group of small, fleshy fruits that typically develop from a single flower and contain one or more seeds embedded in the pulp. In botanical terms, true berries include fruits such as grapes, tomatoes, and blueberries, while many commonly called berries—such as strawberries and raspberries—are classified differently based on their structure. Despite these distinctions, the term “berry” is widely used in everyday language to describe small, soft, and often sweet or tart fruits.

Nutritionally, berries are valued for their high water content and their concentration of natural sugars, dietary fiber, organic acids, and micronutrients. Many berries are rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C, as well as various polyphenols that contribute to flavor, color, and antioxidant activity. Berries are consumed fresh, dried, or processed into juices, preserves, and fermented products, and they play an important role in both traditional diets and modern food systems across many regions of the world.
