African snails

Giant African snails are one of the largest land snail species in the world, originally native to East Africa but now found in many tropical regions, including the Philippines. They thrive in wet, grassy areas and forests, especially after rain, feeding on a variety of plants. While they are considered invasive in some areas due to their rapid reproduction and appetite for crops, they are also edible and have been used as a source of protein in many cultures.

These snails carry natural toxins from the plants they consume and can harbour parasites, making proper cleaning and cooking essential before consumption. When prepared correctly, they have a firm, slightly chewy texture and can be incorporated into flavorful dishes. Purging them with clean food for several days, washing thoroughly, and boiling before cooking ensures they are safe to eat and enjoyable.
