About Google

Google is the brainchild of Larry Page and Sergey Brin that evolved from their attempt at a search engine that would rank pages according to its backlinks. It is one of the most popular and widely-used search engines in the world, so much so that you hear people using the phrase “Google it” in their daily lives to run a web search on something. Google is not just a brand name now; it is a verb, too!

Google History

Google was a successor to Larry and Sergey’s endeavor for a search engine, which they initially called “BackRub”. That was way back in 1996 when they were Ph.D. students at Stanford; they developed it further and later launched it as “Google” in 1998. They created the trademark PageRank, which is an algorithm for assigning webpages a numerical value that depicts the popularity of the page in terms of the number and quality of links that lead to the page. One of the founding fathers of Sun provided them with their startup capital and on September 4, 1998, Google Inc. was initiated. On July 6, 2006, Oxford Dictionary recognized “Google” to be sufficiently ubiquitous, so they added it as a new word.

Google Growth

Over the years, Google has offered various products and web-based services that have made Google more than just a search engine. Google also came up with AdWords – the service that allows people to promote their products online through videos or just plain text. In 2006, Google got hold of YouTube and it is now the largest video-sharing application on the internet. Google has also provided one of the largest cloud repositories for personal and business use. Then there’s Google Docs, so that you can share, edit and store your documents online. In 2004, Google launched Gmail for having easy-to-search mailboxes and threaded emails. There are numerous other products and services Google offer that serve to make lives easier. As if Google didn’t already rule the web, it also tested the waters of the smartphone market with Android in 2005 which was extremely successful and the open-source project has taken over a large part of the market and is ever-growing. Google is future-proof - it has secured a place in the world of internet and mobile communication, which is where the world is headed. Larry and Sergey’s vision was to maintain record of all the information the world has to offer in a way that would be accessible, searchable and indexable. Even though that dream was realized ages ago, Google still remains on top with its innovation and it continues to find new avenues to dip its metaphorical toes in.
