tofu skin

Tofu skin is essentially a soybean product, introduced primarily by the Chinese and the Japanese. Boiling soy milk develops a thin layer of protein-lipid complex over the surface of the milk to be collected and dried in order to form the tofu skin. It is yellow in color and is known to have many health benefits.

Tofu Skin History. It had first been discovered by the Chinese over 2000 years ago. It is sometimes referred to as the 'Cheese of Asia', due to its visual likeness to blocks of cheese, because of the former being packed and wrapped up in such a manner. Etymologically, the origin of the word 'Tofu' is Japanese, with the same word existing in the Chinese language with a slight variation.

Tofu Skin Popularity. It is a popular substitute for meat in vegetarian cuisines because of its somewhat chewy texture. It can also be fried before cooking further, in order to make its skin more compact. It can be purchased in various forms; fresh, half-dried and dried. Tofu skin has still not gained a lot of popularity in the West due to being a vegetarian diet, as Westerners usually prefer a meat diet consisting of chicken or beef. The beans are also bland, and so are not naturally very attractive. Soy food items are also known to cause allergies in different people, like diarrhea and hives (itchy red welts on the surface of the skin).
